Due to devastating Government funding cuts, the helpline faced imminent closure, preventing thousands of male survivors from accessing vital lifesaving support. The decision outraged many people, and we received substantial donations that have enabled us to keep a scaled down service open. But to secure the on-going future of this critical helpline donations are urgently needed.
The helpline provides a confidential, specialist service for male survivors, offering a safe space to talk; access to emotional and practical support, information and advice. Demand for the helpline has grown consistently over the last 9-years, highlighting the need for the service and funding to sustain it.
“The Government’s decision to cease funding for the only male helpline in the country was a real ‘kick in the teeth’ for men and boys impacted by sexual abuse. Safeline could never abandon this group of survivors and donations have helped us keep the service going. However, sustaining it remains a real challenge, and so we need people to continue to donate and support us.”
Liz Harrison, Head of Helpline & Online Support Services, Safeline
Safeline is so grateful to Channel 4 News, Cathy Newman and Claire Sinka for bringing the lack of specialist support services for male survivors of sexual abuse to national and international attention.
