Why we exist

Since 1994, Safeline has supported over 160,000 people across England and Wales.

That number represents adults who found the courage to call a helpline they had been thinking about for months. Children who struggled to understand the overwhelming feelings after an assault. Families who needed someone to talk to. Survivors who had spent years carrying something alone before they told anyone.

Every one of those 160,000 people received support that was free. Long-term. Tailored to them.

What the numbers mean

In 2024, Safeline supported more than 11,000 people. That is the highest number in our 30+ year history.

Demand is not falling. It is rising.

Sexual abuse does not decrease during economic downturns but the funding available to address it does. In 2025, Safeline generated £2.2 million in income. A record. However, we would need £44 million to support every person in Warwickshire alone who has experienced sexual abuse.

The gap between need and resource is not a statistic. It is 160,000 people who found us, and an unknown number who did not.

The evidence behind 30+ years of practice

Safeline holds accreditations that reflect the quality of our work.

Furthermore, we are cited as a specialist resource by the NHS, the Crown Prosecution Service, the Independent Press Standards Organisation, Mind, and gov.uk.

Why this funding gap matters

92% of people who come to Safeline for counselling report that they have experienced suicidal ideation.

This is the core reason that access to specialist, long-term support is not optional. It is life-saving.

Short-term, time-limited services are not adequate for survivors of serious trauma. The evidence from our years of practice is unambiguous: survivors need time, specialist expertise, and continuity of care. That is what Safeline provides. And it is why the funding gap is a public health problem.
