What are deepfakes?

Deepfakes are pictures or videos that are changed using technology to make them look real — even when they’re not.

Sometimes, people use this technology in harmful ways. For example:

  • taking a normal picture of someone and turning it into a sexual image
  • placing someone’s face onto another person’s body
  • using apps to “remove clothing” from photos

Even though the image is fake, it can look very real. That’s what makes it so upsetting.

If this happened to you, how would you feel?

What if someone asks you to do this to someone else?

You might be asked to:

  • share an image or video.
  • edit someone’s photo.
  • join in with something others are doing.

Even if it feels like pressure or a joke, creating or sharing these kinds of images can hurt someone and may be against the law.

It’s okay to say no.
It’s okay to step away.

What can you do?

If something like this happens, you don’t have to deal with it on your own.

You can:

  • tell a trusted adult (parent, teacher, carer).
  • report it on the app or website it was shared on.
  • ask for help to get the image taken down.

It might feel scary to speak up, but getting support can really help.

How to stay safer

You can’t fully stop someone from misusing images, but you can take steps to reduce risk.

Think about what you’re posting online:

  • who can see your photos.
  • whether your accounts are private.
  • who you accept as followers.

Most importantly, if something doesn’t feel right, trust that feeling.
